Drug Delivery and Nanomedicine

Designing systems to deliver medicines and measure their effects on cells and tissues.

At Cornell, biomedical engineering faculty and students use engineering to control how and when medicines are delivered. They study these medicines’ effects on cells and tissues, and their efficacy in trials. Their projects aim to precisely target medicines, such as cancer treatments. They also develop devices for long-lasting injections and systems for vaccine delivery or single-cell genome sequencing or to understand the impact of outside influences on cells. The work integrates investigators working across length scales in all fields of engineering and also include investigators in chemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, veterinary medicine and human medicine.

Cornell provides key resources for this research, including the Chemistry Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility, the Cornell Center for Materials Science, the Cornell Nanofabrication Facility and the Cornell Center for Biotechnology. Most projects involve investigators at the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine and Weill Cornell Medicine.

The faculty researchers in this area exemplify the collaborative nature of the work done at Cornell Engineering.
