First-Hand Experience in a Clinical Environment

The summer immersion term at Weill Cornell Medicine and its affiliated New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City offers first-year Ph.D. students a chance to experience clinical practice and research in a hospital. The term runs from mid-June to early August, about eight weeks, and the program covers housing and transportation.

  • Objectives

    • Acquire basic knowledge of the bioethical issues concerning human subject research.
    • Acquire basic understanding of a clinical specialty – anatomy and disease process, diagnosis and treatment methods and technology.
    • Learn to identify the need and challenges of technology in clinical practice, and to formulate from an engineering perspective the problem of and solution to such challenges.
    • Learn how clinicians think, formulate and solve problems, and how to effectively work with busy practicing clinicians.

    • Learn how biomedical engineering affects patient care
    • Understand the challenges doctors face in providing care
    • Study related medical topics and research
