Minor in Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering minor offers non-engineering students an opportunity to gain essential skills for collaboration with mechanical engineers. The program includes upper-division courses providing thorough knowledge across diverse disciplines within mechanical and aerospace engineering.

Eligibility

Open to all undergraduates except those majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

Students intending to earn this minor should seek advice and pre-approval from the Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs in Mechanical Engineering. Applications for the minor may be obtained in 125 Upson Hall.

Students must earn at least a C- in each course in the minor.

Course Requirements

Students must select at least six courses (≥18 credits) and satisfy the following requirements:

  • Students must take either ENGRD 2020 or ENGRD 2210.
  • At least two courses must be numbered above 3000.
  • At least one course must be either
    • numbered above 5000 or
    • numbered above 3260 and have as its prerequisite ENGRD 2020, ENGRD 2210, or an MAE course.
  • Each course must be worth at least 3 credits. All courses used to satisfy the Mechanical Engineering minor must be Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering courses, ENGRD 2020, or ENGRD 2210.
    • At most, one Mechanical Engineering course from outside Cornell can be used, by petition.
    • MAE 4980: Teaching Experience in Mechanical Engineering, may not be used to satisfy the Mechanical Engineering minor.
    • Credits from MAE 4900 or 4291 may be used for at most one course in the minor.
