M.S. Program in Materials Science and Engineering

Cornell's Master of Science (M.S.) in Materials Science and Engineering program prepares students to succeed in industry, government, and academia. The two-year program combines academic rigor with a strong research component. Working with faculty advisors to tailor your studies to your particular interests, incorporating core topics in materials science as well as specialized courses.

Cornell’s Master of Science (M.S.) students undertake a substantive body of research as a member of a faculty research group. They document their research in a master’s thesis, which they defend in a formal examination by the faculty. Research projects are chosen in consultation with the supervising faculty member and enable students to benefit from Cornell’s powerful combination of an unusually collaborative and interdisciplinary culture and outstanding research facilities.

Research Areas

  • Bioinspired Materials and Systems

Bioinspired composites, engineered protein films for adhesion, lubrication and sensing applications, molecular tools for in-vitro and in-vivo imaging (C-Dots, FRET), as well as biomaterials for tissue engineering and drug delivery.

  • Electronics and Photonics

Oxide semiconductors, 3D integration, materials beyond silicon, high K and low K dielectrics, plasmonics, spintronics and multiferroics.

  • Energy Production and Storage

Photocatalysis, photovoltaics, thermoelectrics, phononics, batteries and supercapacitors.

  • Green Technologies

We have targeted green composites and new systems for CO2 capture and conversion as areas of future growth.
