The Computational and Data Science Certificate is available only as part of the M.Eng. degree

The curriculum for the Computational and Data Science certificate exposes students to an amazing array of applications and tools used in manufacturing, energy, aerospace, defense, transportation, finance, management, health care, supply chain and other fields. This dynamic program is taught by Fengqi You, the Roxanne E. and Michael J. Zak Professor in Energy Systems Engineering.

Employment and Salary Ranges

According to the job search site Indeed, the average annual salary for data scientists is more than $120,000. Many data scientists work for companies such as Google, Amazon, Facebook or various financial institutions. Data scientists offer employers a unique skill set and bring added value to their position.

Obtaining the Computational and Data Science Certificate

To earn the Computational and Data Science Certificate, students must enroll in and achieve a grade of B or higher in two of these three courses:

  • SYSEN 5800/6800: Computational Optimization (4 credits), usually available in the fall semester.
  • SYSEN 5880/6880: Industrial Big Data Analytics and Machine Learning (4 credits), currently offered only in the spring semester.
  • SYSEN 5888/6888: Deep Learning (4 credits), usually offered in the spring semester.

All students who enroll in either the SYSEN 5000-level, SYSEN 6000-level or the chemical engineering cross-listed sessions (CHEME 6800, 6880, or 6888) will also be eligible for the certificate. This is a policy change that took effect in the Fall 2023 semester and cannot be retroactively applied to previous semesters.
