Systems and Synthetic Biology

Integrating experimental, modeling, and engineering approaches to dissect complex cellular phenomena at the network-scale.

Systems biology combines experiments and models to understand complex cell processes in order to analyze the networks of genes, proteins, and metabolites that control cell functions.

Our faculty explore how these networks are regulated in healthy tissues. They also study what happens when these networks fail, leading to diseases like cancer or issues in aging. They develop new therapies and biomolecules to tackle these problems. Recently, there’s a push to combine experiments and models at the single-cell level. This research aims to understand how differences between cells contribute to disease and affect treatment responses.

This research benefits from collaborations with various groups and institutions. Notable partners include Cornell’s Single Cell Working Group, NIH-funded Physical Sciences Oncology Center, and Stem Cell Program, as well as in collaborations with clinical and research scientists at Weill Cornell Medicine, including the Englander Institute for Precision Medicine.

The faculty researchers in this area exemplify the collaborative nature of the work done at Cornell Engineering.
