Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

International students may want to participate in Curricular Practical Training (CPT). CPT is off-campus work that gives you work experience in your field of study. To qualify for CPT, undergraduate students in engineering majors other than CS or ISST will enroll in ENGRG 4998, Engineering Practical Training. If CPT is completed in the summer, you would enroll in and take course credit in ENGRG 4998 in the following fall semester.  For spring and fall semester part-time CPT, take the course credit at the same time as your employment. For full-time CPT over winter break, take the course credit in the spring.  ENGRG 4998 is graded S/U, 0.25 credit.

The instructions below apply only to students in Engineering who have affiliated with a major that is neither CS nor ISST. CS majors should refer to their own CS CPT Procedures.  Likewise, ISST majors should refer to their own IS/ISST CPT Procedures.

See F-1 CPT for further details and to access the form to sign up for CPT.  Where the form asks for "Academic Advisor or Department Representative", put " Engineering Registrar" for "Department Approver Name." Put "eng_registrar@cornell.edu" for "Department Approver Email". During add/drop for the semester you return to campus, the Engineering Registrar will manually enroll you into ENGRG 4998.  If the class does not appear by the first week of classes, reach out to the registrar’s office at eng_registrar@cornell.edu.

To earn credit you will write a short paper describing your work experience and how it connects to the educational objectives of your particular major.  Details on submission of the paper will be provided at the start of the semester.
