Professor Yong Joo has been named the Senior Associate Dean for M.Eng. Programs. Dean Lynden Archer sent the following message to the Cornell Engineering community on May 20:
Cornell Engineering Community,
I’m pleased to announce the promotion of Professor Yong Joo to the role of Senior Associate Dean for Masters of Engineering Programs, effective July 1, 2021.
Yong is the BP Amoco/H. Laurance Fuller Professor in the Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and has been serving as the Associate Dean for M.Eng. Programs since 2019. In his role as Associate Dean, Yong has strengthened COE M.Eng. programs by consistently advocating for excellence and by introducing a new level of commitment to the professional development of our students. In two short years, he has helped build a more collaborative, more unified culture among M.Eng. program leaders and programs, college-wide. Finally, Yong has put in place innovative programming that leverages a growing network of M.Eng. alumni as a resource for improving professional development and placement of COE graduates.
In his Senior Associate Dean role, Yong will build a more robust team of support staff, faculty advisors, and cross-college programming designed to enhance the quality of the experience Cornell Engineering provides to M.Eng., professional degree, and certificate students.
Yong will also lead a broad, college-wide initiative that builds the college’s presence as a distance learning (DL) hub for professional, certificate, and other students. In this regard, he is already working with several COE schools and departments on DL programs that could serve as pilots for the rest of the college. These programs are exciting for a variety of reasons, including the potential for creating flexibility in the experiences the COE is able to offer undergraduate students, especially students interested in studying abroad, studying away (e.g., at Cornell Tech) and in pursuing unconventional internship experiences as they pursue their B.S. degree.
Please join me in congratulating Yong on this promotion and for his commitment to improving the quality of the Cornell Engineering experience for our professional degree and certificate students.
Best regards,
Lynden A. Archer
