Requesting a Tutor
TUTORS-ON-CALL opens for appointments for the fall semester on September 9, 2024. Click on the 'Request a Tutor' link above to schedule an appointment.
The Tutors-on-Call Program is available to undergraduate students in the College of Engineering and BEE majors in CALS. Be sure to read extended guidelines on the tutoring request page before scheduling an appointment.
Tutor Guidelines
When requesting a tutor, please keep in mind the following policies:
- Tutors are not available for help with homework or projects: please consult your course’s office hours for assistance.
- You may meet with a tutor once or you may meet regularly throughout the semester, depending on your needs.
- Since peer tutors are students just like you and have busy schedules, your first choice of tutor may not be able to accommodate your initial tutor request. If this is the case, you will be given the opportunity to schedule a session with another tutor.
- Tutors are likely to be busy during the same times as you, particularly around prelims and finals. Thus, it is important that you make a request and schedule a tutoring session far enough in advance to accommodate both your and your tutor's schedules.
- For more information on the courses ELI provides tutors, access this page.
During the Tutoring Session
The goal of one-on-one peer tutoring is to promote the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills. To that end, please do not expect the tutor to sit with you while you do your homework. This should be completed in advance so that your time may be spent addressing what concepts you don't understand.
While tutors will not provide the answers to homework problems, they will provide examples that will help you understand the process of finding a solution. At the end of your tutoring session, you and your tutor will review what you have covered, clarify any remaining questions, and arrange for another meeting if desired.
